Do you have a business that has a very large garage door? If so, you need to pay attention to it so that it will stay in great shape. Here are some potential problems that you can run into.

Bent Casters

Start by looking at the casters that are holding the garage door on the track. A large commercial garage door is going to be very heavy, which can put more weight on these casters than a residential door. It's possible that the casters have become bent over time even though the door is still on the track. It is worth replacing those casters to ensure that the door is moving up and down evenly.

Bent Hinges

While you're looking at the casters, inspect the hinges that are connecting each panel of the garage door. The weight of the door is likely to put a lot of pressure on the hinges, and they can become bent over time as well. You'll need to replace any bent hinges with brand-new ones that will hold the door together securely.

Bent Tracks

The tracks that hold the garage door in place when it is open or closed can also become bent. This is due to the tracks trying to hold the weight of a very heavy garage door. Bent tracks may be able to be bent back into the proper position but that is only a temporary fix. You'll eventually need to replace these bent tracks.

Damaged Safety Mechanisms

Every garage door will have two safety mechanisms that are designed to prevent the garage door from causing an injury or damaging property. There is the electric eye that runs across the bottom of the garage door and an auto-reverse mechanism that detects pressure under the path of the door and opens the door back up. You'll want to test both of these safety mechanisms to ensure that they are working since it may not always be apparent.

Simply close the door and wave an object in the path of the electric eye as it is closing. You should also use an object to place pressure on the door as it is closing in a separate test. These actions should cause the door to go back into the open position. If not, you'll need to repair the safety mechanisms.
